If you have a swimming pool in your home, you may have heard of booster pumps. Booster pumps allow for improved filtration, faster pool warm-up time, and better chlorine distribution. Let's take a brief look at how it works
A booster pump is not much different from a pump that is already attached to a swimming pool. With the booster pump connected, your automatic pool cleaner will get more water pressure so it can move and function.
Typically, booster pumps have a motor output of 1 horsepower or less. While one of the pumps is attached to your pool much like the main pump, the pool booster pump does not come with a filter basket.
What are the advantages of using a booster pump for your pool?
In addition to ensuring you get the most out of your pool cleaner, adding a booster pump is inexpensive and an easy way to improve your pool's water quality while reducing operating costs.
Additional pumps allow for improved filtration, faster pool warm-up times, and better chlorine distribution due to more efficient circulation.
Pool boosters also give you the option to increase pressure when needed and run water features that require more pressure.
How does a pool booster pump work?
Many pressure-side pool cleaners require at least 30 PSI (pounds per square inch) of water pressure to function. Before connecting the booster pump, you must set up the plumbing.
In most cases, this requires cutting the return pipe and adding connectors so the water can flow through the dedicated cleaning pipe.
As far as electricity goes, you'll find that most booster pumps are dual voltage. This means they can operate on 230 volts or 115 volts. If you choose the 115-volt option, you will usually have to convert the wiring first.
Booster pumps run on centrifugal force and use one or more impellers to introduce water. As the water is conveyed through the impeller and volute of the pump, the water pressure increases. Single-stage pumps have only one impeller, two-stage pumps have two impellers, and multi-stage pumps have more than two impellers. The more impellers used, the higher the water pressure.
The above describes the working principle of the swimming pool booster pump. If you plan to buy a booster pump, please
